The course will focus on advanced carving techniques, such as shallow carving for textural effects, carving fine lines and using resist methods on the woodblock. You will deepen your knowledge and experience of more sophisticated printing techniques, such as achieving expanded gradation styles, blind embossing, woodgrain effect and mica printing.

You are encouraged to bring your own carved blocks with you to develop your printing and Lucy will provide Japanese shina plywood to use to test carving effects to create various samples of line and shape.

This is an opportunity to trouble shoot any carving/registration/printing issues you may have experienced and to gain further confidence to achieve higher quality, consistent prints in your mokuhanga practice. This course is an opportunity to experiment and test effects that you can then return to your studio to home.

Course Description

Who is it for?

This Advanced Mokuhanga (water-based woodblock printmaking) course is intended for those who have some experience of Mokuhanga and want to develop their skills in water-based woodblock printmaking. It is ideally suited to Artists, educators, printmakers, and illustrators that would like to gain an advanced understanding of the Mokuhanga, (water-based woodblock printmaking) process.

Content structure

Day 1 will act as a refresher on the entire carving and printing process of mokuhanga, trouble-shooting any issues students may have experienced. New carving effects will be demonstrated and explored by students on new plywood blocks. 

Day 2 there will be the opportunity to test these new carving effects through printing a series of test prints.

Day 3 will be an opportunity to see new printing techniques (as outlined in the course overview) and to experiment with these throughout the day.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the mokuhanga process, and expand their knowledge of carving and printing and the endless possibilities these offer. Students will leave with the confidence to achieve prints of a higher quality with advanced techniques and greater consistency for editioning their prints.

How is the course delivered?

This will be a physical course, delivered in person at our UWE Bristol City Campus (Bower Aston) by  course leader Lucy May Schofield. This course will run from 9.30am - 4.30pm each day. 

The course price includes all materials, PPE and catering.

About Lucy May Schofield

Lucy May Schofield studied Japanese printmaking and paper making techniques whilst living in Japan for 2 years. She regularly returns to exhibit and attend residencies, last year completing the upper advanced training programme at the Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory near Mt.Fuji. Lucy has taught book arts and printmaking nationally for over 12 years and regularly runs introductory workshops as well as masterclasses. She makes books and prints, exhibiting her work internationally. Her work is held in public and private collections from the Tate to Yale Centre for British Art. She was the 2020 recipient of the Flourish Award for Excellence in Printmaking from WYPW. She is currently based in rural Northumberland.
