Join Jeremy Dixon, the poet and artist’s book maker, for two days of inspirational, practical work devoted to producing your own unique poetic artists’ book. We will examine artists’ books long association with poetry and how such books can reflect, amplify and/or become the themes of the poetry they contain. We will use an eclectic range of poetic and practical bookmaking techniques including concrete poetry, erasure poetry, Found poetry, collage, pamphlets, zines, stab binding and collaboration to create new and exciting work. This will be an energetic, practical two days looking at words and poetry in fun and inclusive ways, and aims to give participants the confidence and techniques to find new ways of using words and poetry in their own practice.

All materials will be provided but please bring along any poetry (either your own or by someone else) or any other items of ephemera that you have collected and may want to incorporate into a book (don't worry if you haven't got anything, there will be lots of stuff available on the course to use!).

The Poetic Artists’ Books course is ideally suited to Artists, poets, writers, students, and people with an interest in literature and books.

Content and structure

Join Jeremy Dixon, the poet and artist's book maker, for two days of inspirational, practical work devoted to producing your own unique poetic artists' books.

We will examine artists' books long association with poetry and how such books can reflect, amplify and/or become the themes of the poetry they contain. How is the course delivered?

This will be a physical course, delivered in person at our UWE Bristol City campus (Bower Aston) from 9.30 - 4.30pm each day.

About Jeremy Dixon

Jeremy Dixon is a poet and maker of Artist’s Books. His poetry has appeared in Butcher’s Dog, Found Poetry Review, HIV Here & Now, Impossible Archetype, Lighthouse Journal, Riptide Journal, Roundyhouse and other print and online magazines. He is the author of the pamphlet IN RETAIL (Arachne Press, 2019). His first collection A VOICE COMING FROM THEN was published by Arachne Press in August 2021. The book encompasses themes of bullying, queerphobia, acceptance and support as well unexpected typography, collage, magic, discotheques and a Victorian demon, Spring-Heeled Jack. Jeremy founded Hazard Press in 2010 to create Artist’s Books combining poetry, photography, queerness, individuality, compassion and humour. He writes, designs, and makes all his books by hand, relishing the slight differences and imperfections that can result. Hazard Press has participated in many book fairs including Turn the Page in Norwich, The Poetry Book Fair and the Small Publishers’ Fair in London. Hazard Press books are in the collections of: the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich; the National Library of Wales; the Saison Poetry Library; Tate, London; and the University of Pennsylvania. Hazard Press books have been sold at Book Art Book Shop in London and the Minnesota Centre for Book Art in Minneapolis. 

The course price includes all materials, PPE and catering.
