The word Collage derives from the French ‘to glue’ and has an ancient history dating back to the invention of paper in China in about 200 BC. Look around and you will see Collage everywhere and so perhaps it is a way of responding to, and trying to make sense of, a very fractured and disconnected world. In book arts we can use collage to unite disparate elements to create something new and whole in it’s own terms, in either very controlled or in free-flowing organic ways. Over two days we will try many different collage techniques relating to words, images, magazines, pictures, books, cutting, pasting, stitching, splicing and creating.

This practical course will give participants the time and space needed to make collages and collaged books that they may not have otherwise produced. Some projects may involve group collaborations. Some projects can be one-off pieces, others could be small editions.

Who is it For?
This course is ideally suited to Book Arts practitioners, students, professional artists, amateur artists, and book-makers, seeking to learn completely new skills, or to brush up/develop existing ones and to then proceed to working on their own projects once the course has finished.

The course will be structured but it will also be exciting and spontaneous, responding to the desires of the participants.

How will the course be delivered? 

This will be a physical course, delivered in person at W Block on Frenchay Campus by course leader Jeremy Dixon. This course will run from 10am - 4pm both days. 

About Jeremy Dixon

Jeremy Dixon is a prize-winning poet, performer, workshop leader and maker of Artist’s Books. His
poetry has appeared in Anti-Heroin Chic, Butcher’s Dog, Found Poetry Review, HIV Here &
Now, Impossible Archetype, Lighthouse Journal, Roundyhouse, Queerlings and other print and
online magazines. He is the author of the pamphlet IN RETAIL (Arachne Press, 2019). His
first full collection A VOICE COMING FROM THEN (Arachne Press, 2021) won the Wales Book of the
Year Poetry Award 2022. He is also co-editor of the forthcoming LGBTQ+ poetry anthology JOY//
US (Arachne Press, 2024).
Jeremy founded Hazard Press in 2010 to create Artist’s Books combining poetry, photography, queerness, individuality, compassion and humour. He writes, designs, and makes all his books by hand, relishing the slight differences and imperfections that can result. Hazard Press has participated in many book fairs including BABE, Turn the Page, The Poetry Book Fair and the Small Publishers’ Fair.

 

Hazard Press books are in the collections of: the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich; the National Library of Wales; the Saison Poetry Library; Tate, London; and the University of Pennsylvania. Hazard Press books have been sold at Book Art Book Shop in London and the Minnesota Center for Book Art
in Minneapolis. In January 2023, Hazard Press and Hormazd Narielwalla held a joint exhibition, Queering Connections: Narielwalla // Dixon at The Winchester Gallery at the University of Southampton.
