This one day course will give participants a chance to learn about the history of screen printing, learn various techniques - from artworking to coating your own screen, but most importantly to have fun, get inky and engage with the printing process.

Participants of the course will leave with their own hand printed artwork. They will also have a good understanding of the process of screenprinting which would give them the confidence to return for future workshops, or to enter any print room and know what to do.

This course price includes all materials and PPE.

Beginner Screenprinting 2025
Course Description

The beginners workshop is perfect for people who have little or no experience screenprinting.

Course Structure

The course will start with an introduction to the history of screenprinting, and its uses over the years. Laura will show examples of different methods and techniques within screenprint, and talk about artworking, inks and substrates.

Next we will move onto how to prepare a screen, participants will each be coating their own individual screen. We will talk about artwork, and printing positives digitally to be exposed onto a screen based on artwork the particants have bought with them to the workshop. We will expose the screens and then break for lunch.

In the afternoon we will mix inks, learn about the different inks we can use for different substrates and start printing in pairs.

How will the course be delivered? 

This will be a physical course, delivered in person at W block at our UWE Frenchay Campus by course tutor Laura Clarke Oaten. The course will run from 10am - 4pm.  

About Laura Clarke Oaten

Laura graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2010 with an MA in Fine Art Printmaking, where she received the Alf Dunn prize and the Augustus Martin Award for excellence. She was awarded a Fellowship at the Royal Academy Schools in 2012 and has worked as a Tutor in Fine Art Printmaking at City & Guilds of London Art School for the last 10 years. She currently works for CFPR, master printing for artists as part of the Artist in Residence scheme.
