Detailed Description

The Women Artist-Printers' Portfolio project was conceived to amplify the voices of women who print letterpress: a relief printing process using wood or metal type and plates. The portfolio consists of eight works (two made in collaborative pairs) that explore the theme of Allyship. An ally being a person who acts with and for others in pursuit of ending oppression and creating equality. Allys use their privilege and resources, advocating solidarity and collective action to create meaningful, lasting change.

Historically, letterpress printing was a male-dominated industry. Today the process sits on the periphery of contemporary printmaking practice and is under-represented at print fairs and exhibitions. However, historical accounts of overlooked women in print are now evidencing a lineage of feminist practice. Contemporary artists, researchers and collectives are acting as changemakers, using letterpress to reclaim space, combining traditional, tactile techniques with feminist, queer, and political narratives. This creative project platform with Artlab Contemporary Print Studio (ACPS) allows women to redress the conventions associated with letterpress printing and encourage new practitioners to this Heritage craft practice.

Participating artists:  Angie Butler & Nancy Campbell, Rebecca Chesney, Pauline Clancy, Theresa Easton, Beck Howson, Hilary Judd & Lucy May Schofield, Rachel Marsh and Heather Mullender-Ross.
